All Night Long…

That’s how long it took Ecosystem and its partners to lift 50,000 pounds of new chillers to their 12th floor penthouse location at the Brooklyn Hospital Center.

A 600-ton crane parked in front of the hospital was stabilized by two flatbed trucks on either side to be secure enough to lift the two chillers 160 feet up and into their new location. A “superlift” counterweight was used as well to make sure the crane did not tip as it lifted the chillers into position. It took the team from 4pm in the afternoon until 7am the next morning to get the two chillers in place.

The two chillers, one a steam-powered absorption chiller and the other a dual compressor electric chiller with variable frequency drives, are replacing an outdated system located in the hospital’s basement. Installing two chillers guarantees redundancy not only in terms of equipment but also of power source – if one chiller or one source of power is out of commission, the other chiller can take over. At the same time, the new equipment will achieve cost savings through energy efficiency and enhanced operating performance.

The next step in installation is to connect the chillers to the existing electricity and plumbing network, a process that will last around 10 weeks.
