Glen Cove Schools Partner with Ecosystem and PSEG Long Island for Energy Efficiency

The Glen Cove City School District on Long Island has taken significant strides toward energy efficiency and sustainability with the guidance of Ecosystem and financial support from PSEG Long Island. This comprehensive project addresses urgent infrastructure needs while delivering substantial cost savings and environmental benefits.

After two bond proposals failed to win voter approval, Glen Cove sought alternative financial solutions to modernize their facilities. Working through an Energy Performance Contract (EPC), the district chose Ecosystem as a partner. Together, they defined a scope of work that targeted critical energy infrastructure needs and maximized financial benefits. On behalf of the district, Ecosystem applied to PSEG Long Island’s Rebate Program for several of the energy conservation measures implemented district-wide. On October 23, this collaboration was celebrated at a Board of Education meeting with an $89,108 rebate check presentation, honoring the district’s commitment to energy innovation.

“Working with the Ecosystem team has been a pleasure. With nearly two decades in construction projects, I can confidently say this initiative demonstrates Glen Cove’s commitment to sustainability and financial responsibility while creating a healthier learning environment for our students,” said Victoria Galante, Assistant Superintendent for Business. This dedication to both fiscal and environmental stewardship has been the driving force behind the project’s success.

The scope of Glen Cove’s project includes essential upgrades such as high-efficiency boilers, a 600kW solar PV system that now supplies 50% of the district’s electricity, and redesigned LED lighting in every school. Two new rooftop units with integrated heat pumps were installed at Glen Cove High School to improve space conditions, while taking advantage of the higher efficiency of electric heat pumps when it is financially viable.  Ecosystem also incorporated a heat recovery wheel, capturing excess heat to reduce overall energy consumption and costs.

In total, the energy efficiency measures are projected to reduce Glen Cove’s energy bills by $350,000 annually and reduce greenhouse gas by 50%.

As the project moves into the energy savings monitoring phase, Ecosystem is proud to be part of Glen Cove’s journey toward sustainability, delivering long-term savings and operational efficiency. This successful partnership exemplifies Ecosystem’s mission to enable impactful, cost-effective energy solutions tailored to the specific needs of our clients.

Ecosystem has been recognized for its outstanding work on another K-12 project at North Shore Central School District, receiving the 2024 Region I (spanning NY, NJ, and New England) Technology Award for Engineering Excellence for Institutional Existing Buildings from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). This award highlights Ecosystem’s commitment to engineering excellence and impactful solutions in educational facilities.
