Mount Sinai Beth Israel Wins Energy Project of the Year

Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital wins the 2014 Energy Project of the Year – Region 1 Award. Ecosystem, the design-build partner for the project, is proud to accept this award on our client’s behalf at the World Energy Engineering Congress (WEEC) in Washington, DC. This award, organized by the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE), celebrates innovative energy management projects that can be substantiated with actual installation costs and operating savings.

The 2014 award covers all of Region 1, which includes the following states: Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont. Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital was also the recipient of the 2013 Energy Project of the Year Award from the AEE New York Chapter.

The Mount Sinai Beth Israel project generates $600,000 in energy savings annually. The total project cost was $4.1 million and the key energy conservation measures (ECMs) include:
• Installation of a combined heat and power (CHP) plant
• Steam-to-hot-water heating conversion
• Upgrades to automated controls and drives
• Water conservation
• Lighting retrofit

The project is also reducing CO₂ emissions by 481 tons per year.

As Mount Sinai Beth Israel’s partner, Ecosystem implemented the project based on an approach called Integrated Energy Performance Contracting (IEPC). This approach holistically addresses all phases of the project such as design, construction, and measurement and verification.

The award ceremony takes place today at 4pm in Washington, DC, on the margins of the 37th annual World Energy Engineering Congress, an all-encompassing energy event of national and international scope for end users and energy professionals in all areas of the energy field.
